The Strathmore Arena has sprung a leak in the water pipes that maintain the feed into the Gold rink.  The broken pipe comes from the ice plant that carries a brine (water mixed with salt) that runs under the rink floor. Another series of lines carry the ammonia.  Both the ammonia plant and the ice plant work together to create the rink ice.  Mark Prtlaff with Town of Strathmore, said "The brine pipe is leaking and the indicator is the brine levels needed to be topped up consistently. In order to fix the leak, we need shut down the ice plant and thaw the rink.  Then test each line one by one by creating a closed system waterline and then monitor the pressure levels to see which one drops. The Pad is 30-years old and Olympic sized so that causes additional variables."  The ammonia lines were replaced in 2017 so the tragedy that occurred in Fernie B.C. arena is quite unlikely due to the newness of the system.  Prtlaff outlined the scope of possible work " if it is just one line, you can shut it down but if more lines are affected they may need to demolish a portion of the floor to replace that section."  If that is the case the gold ice rink could be shut down for even longer.
