Stormwater management facilities play a big role in keeping neighbourhoods safe from flooding.

While stormwater facilities might look calm and serene, much is happening underneath the surface. Water is constantly moving as it enters and exits the facilities through pipes.

The Town of Strathmore Parks Department clears snow from designated areas on Kinsmen Lake and Strathmore Lakes. They conduct daily measurements to ensure that the ice surface is safe for skating.

"Please do not, clear snow or enlarge the skating surfaces. Designated skating areas have been selected as the sections of the lake least likely to experience erosion due to sub-surface water movement," the Town of Strathmore said in a Facebook post.

Recreational use of the Town of Strathmore Storm Ponds is only permitted on Kinsmen Lake and Strathmore Lakes.

"Safe skating activities are supported when the ice thickness has surpassed 10 inches. The designated areas have been selected as the sections of the lake least likely to experience erosion due to sub-surface water movement. Our Team will continue to monitor and maintain recreational areas on these two surfaces throughout the season," explained the Town of Strathmore's website.
