This week residents of Strathmore will say goodbye to a business icon and landmark.

What has been known to many in the area as Leroy's Motor Inn event after that past name change to Motel One, is expected to be completely demolished within the week. The area where the inn is currently standing is being cleared for the construction of a new shopping complex called Strath Point Plaza.

According to the leasing agents working on the new proposed 25,000 square feet development. The expansion is expected to be ready for tenants towards the end of this year.

The space that was previously occupied by Leroy's plans to bring several new businesses and conveniences to the residents of Strathmore and out of town shoppers.

Jeff Hopper a leasing agent representing the owners of the project explained what people can expect to see, "We have a Petro Canada with electric EV charging stations. We've got a Wendy's that'll be a pad site with their brand new Wendy's 2.0 concept. And we've got a couple more food uses that we're working on and just working with a number of different prospects."

The team does hope to see other businesses for residents to utilize outside of restaurants noted Hopper, "Ideally we're looking for some medical uses, pharmacy you know those types of uses, as well possibly fitness facilities."

Leasing agents are still in the planning stages however and are looking for more businesses that can fill the 15 proposed storefronts that will pop up beside highway 1 next year.

Hopper underlines the importance of this new shopping centre to both the residents of Strathmore and the economic prosperity of the community.

“Strathmore is an interesting area because even though the town is only about 13 and a half thousand people, it actually serves a much larger trade area. So a lot of people depend on Strathmore to do their shopping on the weekend.”

Hopper did note that residents should not expect too many interruptions in their daily travel when construction begins on the new site, "It'll be completely contained to the site so there should be no impact to any of the people traveling through there."

Hopper did express that the owners hope to work to bring more business to that part of town noting that the building was no longer in a state to be renovated and that starting over was the best option to service the Strathmore area.
