On March 25 at around 1:35 a.m., Strathmore RCMP was conducting a check stop on Parklane Drive near Thomas Drive. During the check-stop, a black sedan with two occupants approached. A mandatory alcohol screening test was conducted for the driver which resulted in a caution reading. As a GDL driver, a 30-day Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) suspension was issued, accompanied by a seven-day vehicle seizure. The vehicle was searched prior to the impoundment where a backpack containing a significant amount of what was believed to be illicit drugs was found. Both the driver and passenger were arrested and transported to Strathmore Detachment. Both were eventually released to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice at later date.

Lab analysis of the seized substances was conducted to confirm their type and composition. During the search the following items were seized:

  • $2540 cash
  • Approximately 548 grams of Fentanyl combined with Bromazolam with an approximate street value of $109 600
  • Approximately 79 grams of Cocaine with an approximate street value of $7900
  • Approximately 384 grams of Methamphetamine with an approximate street value of $38 400.

21-year-old Sebastien Gillet-Smith and 22-year-old Brandon Prechner are both residents of Calgary and have since made court appearances. They have been charged with three counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking.

“The arrests and seizures in this matter are attributed to the dedication and diligence of our members who were working that night to keep our community safe. Not only from impaired drivers, but as it turned out in this case from the potential distribution of approximately 9,478 combined doses of illicit drugs.” Strathmore RCMP Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Mark Wielgosz said.
