The oldest running 4-H club in Alberta is celebrating 100 years.

East Lacombe 4-H Beef Club 17-year-old member, Julie Sharp, says she's the fourth generation to come through the club.

Sharp's Great Grandpa, grandfather, dad and uncles were all in the club she now participants in with her brothers and cousins.

She says the group was founded in 1919 as the Lacombe Boys Breeding Club.

"When my grandpa was in 4-H in this club, his sisters had to be in a different club with sewing and cooking, and then the boys were in the beef 4-H Club, so it's definitely changed a lot."

Sharp says the group was later changed to allow girls, becoming the Lacombe Boys and Girls Calf Club, and after a number of name changes over the years, became the East Lacombe 4-H Beef Club.

The group held their centennial celebration Saturday, June 15, at the Central Alberta Agricultural Society in Lacombe, which brought out generations of alumni members, where Sharp says they had a sell out crowd of about 200 people.

"There was actually one lady who came all the way from the Yukon for the celebration. She was in the 4-H club back when she was a kid, so that was cool."

When reflecting on her nine years with the Club, Sharp says it's such an honour to be involved in a group with so much history.
