103 Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacy care clinics are set to be all over the province by the end of 2024. 

The expansion represents a $77-million investment by the Canadian pharmacy retailer into the province.

"I want to take a moment to thank the Government of Alberta for their part in making this possible for providing a welcoming environment for investment and innovation, and for recognizing the important role pharmacists can play in the delivery of primary care," said the President of Shoppers Drug Mart, Jeff Leger. 

The locations of these pharmacy care will be split between renovating existing pharmacies as well as the building of new pharmacies which will allow for a care clinic space. 

"We have 25 new locations launching across the country. Nine of them are in Alberta. As the stores come on board, they'll be configured in this way to be able to provide those services. 103 is more than 50 percent of our current Shoppers Drug Mart network in Alberta," said Leger. 

Minister of Health Adriana LaGrange said Pharmacists are integral to the health system and the provision of high-quality care to Albertans.

"This commitment by Shoppers Drug Mart to invest in primary care in Alberta communities aligns with our government’s efforts to refocus the province’s health system. These pharmacy care clinics are an innovative way to offer Albertans convenient and easily accessible care in their community."

In early October of 2023, Shoppers Drug Mart in Strathmore had the grand opening of their pharmacy care clinic. 

"Access to Primary Health care services has been an ongoing issue across the country for some time now. However, this clinic will be making it easier for the patient to get access to the services that they need," said Strathmore Associate Owner and Pharmacist, Moses Ojemakinde. 

Ojemakinde expanded on that thought by saying that the opening of the clinic means that patients will have access to the services they need from the dedicated teams of pharmacists in a familiar setting. 

No word as to when the rest of the pharmacy care clinics will start opening across the province.
