Carseland-based Oku Damashi Martial Arts is holding a fundraiser to help the club qualify for a special world tournament in Portugal.

The club sent six students to Ottawa to compete in the National Karate Tournament last month, and they brought home eight medals, including five gold medals and three bronze medals in both continuous and point sparing.

Those six students will now go on to represent Team Canada and compete in the World Karate Championships (WKC) in Albufeira, Portugal, from October 26 to November 1.

Jennifer Alce explains that from now until September, they will hold a few different fundraisers to raise money for the students going to Portugal.

"It is funded mostly by the families, so it can get pretty expensive."

To donate and get your 50/50 tickets, you can visit the Oku Damashi Worlds Tournament 2024.

Another way to donate to the cause is by saving your empty bottles.

"If they drop off bottles at the Langdon Bottle Depot, they just have to say it's for the Oku Damashi Fundraiser."

According to Alce, competitors hope to raise $4000 each for the trip.
