More than $12 million in additional money would be provided to school administrations to serve newly enrolled Ukrainian students.

In September, schools recognized more than 2,200 enrolled students as Ukrainian evacuees. As a result, the government is giving $12.3 million in scholastic, social, and language aids.

“Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Albertans have stepped up to support Albertans of Ukrainian descent and Ukrainian evacuees. This new funding will help each new student from Ukraine receive the supports they need to be successful in their studies,” stated Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.

The adjustment to Alberta's educational system and community will be aided by this support. In order to ensure that Ukrainian children and students who arrive in the middle of the school year are also supported, additional funds will be made available in March 2023.

Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Education mentioned “schools play an important role in the growth and well-being of youth, which is why Ukrainian children need our help to feel supported and welcomed. The funding we are providing to school authorities will help ensure schools can provide additional language, programming, and mental health supports to new Ukrainian students.”

Ukrainian students are enrolled in 612 schools run by 58 school authorities around the province.
