Strathmore will soon be celebrating Seniors' Week to honour those who have helped pave the way for us.

The Wheatland Society of the Arts will be hosting a whole list of events.

Unfortunately, many seniors deal with Alzheimer's disease.

Megan Williams, the communications specialist with Alzheimer Calgary, says there are common misconceptions between Alzheimer's and dementia.

"Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia. There are over 100 diseases of our brain that can cause dementia. And Alzheimer's is just one type of dementia. It just happens to be the most common.

According to Williams, the organization says to not be intimidated about spending time with a loved one who is living with dementia.

"Continue to spend time with and interact with the person living with dementia, even post-diagnosis."

A study from Alzheimer Calgary, says 57 per cent of people polled said that they fear Alzheimer's disease and dementia the most as they continue to age.

"Only a small percentage of dementia is actually genetic," added Williams.

Seniors' Week will run from June 3-9.
