February is heart month, and it is not over quite yet.

In North America and elsewhere, February is marked as ‘Heart Month’ to bring attention to the importance of cardiovascular health and what we can do to reduce our risk of cardiovascular disease.

Heart disease is currently one of the leading causes of death in Canada, second only to cancer. 1 in 12, or 2.6 million, adults aged 20 and older live with diagnosed heart disease.

While rates of heart disease in Canada have been declining, largely due to advances in research, drug therapies, and prevention efforts, many risk factors still contribute to heart disease.

Lifestyle changes, whether they be big or small, help reduce your risk. These changes include eating healthier, getting proper sleep, being physically active, managing stress, and limiting alcohol consumption.

The Town of Strathmore has many amenities such as swimming lessons at the Aquatic Centre, Free Skate Sundays at the Family Centre, or the various exercise classes at Strathmore Motor Products Sports Centre to get your heart active and in shape.
