The Strathmore Ice U16b ringette team won their zone championship last Saturday with a hard-fought 4-3 win over the Airdrie Smash. Shelley Read is the mother of player Katie Cumming and said watching them play all year and end the season on a high note was a special moment.

"It was extremely exciting, our team has had a really great year. They've come together amazing as a team, playing really well," Read said.

It was a full-circle moment for the team, as Airdrie was also the first team they played this season in an exhibition match. Read said beating Airdrie to get the banner was a wonderful way to end the season.

"It was a great reward for the end of the season for all of the hard work they put in."

Outside of this zone win, the Ice did well in provincials too, which was from March 17-19. Read said they went in as the ninth seed out of twelve teams but earned fifth place, which the team was very proud of. This was made even more impressive by the fact they had to face the first and second seeds early in the tournament, but still earned fifth place.

While their on-ice accomplishments were definitely worth celebrating, Read said the season as a whole was great, regardless of what happened on the rink.

"They've come together as a team so strongly, doing things for the community, they did gift boxes for the Wheatland County Foodbank at Christmas time, and just being out there and open and great friends."

Read would also like to thank the team's sponsor, C/S Framing LTD.
