A $4.2 million investment from Ottawa is set to improve capacity for agriculture products on a short line railway in Southern Alberta.

On Monday, August 26, the Federal Government announced the project will involve upgrading Forty Mile Rail's Transload Facility at Foremost as well as improving the Cardston Subdivision line.

Established back in 2016, the Forty Mile Rail short line railway connects Foremost with the CP Rail junction near Stirling.

The existing infrastructure restricts the number of cars which can be moved on the line to 25 cars at a time, according to the Government release.

The Government say the improvements will allow growth of the line's annual number of agricultural carloads for export, from 263 carloads last year, to 4,000 carloads a year in the short-term.

They say this will grow to 15,000 carloads over time.

In addition to improving capacity meant to improve trade flow, the Government anticipates this investment to create 95 jobs in the region during construction.
