The Strathmore Spurs U13 Tier 4 team is getting better and better. The team is home after winning silver at the Okotoks United Soccer Club’s Anthem Community Cup tournament last weekend,

The team made it all the way to the gold medal final and coach Ashley Hanna was so proud of the effort the team put forth, “They played really well, they were very excited to win silver. They were very pumped to be a part of the gold medal game. Even though we came up short, they were all so very excited to come out with the silver.”

This team has seen a lot of growth in 2022,  “We've had a lot of new players on our team this year, so they've really come together as a team and obviously this is just showing how much they've grown and improved in all their skills,” she said.

The tournament was an eye-opening experience for the players.

“We have a lot of new players, they've never really experienced that before, so it's a lot of games for them they were definitely all tired by the end of it.”

Depending on the number of teams that will be participating in provincials, Hanna expects the team to play a few more games when they get to the provincials. Learning from the past weekend the team has some skills and new strategies they will be focusing on in the coming weeks.

“We're definitely going to work on conditioning. There's a lot of running, so we definitely need to get stronger and just get them used to being on the field a lot.”

Hanna says the team has great communication and the experienced players are really stepping up to support the new players to build a solid team, and this weekend was a big moment for one of their players.

“One of our new players got her first goal over the weekend, so that was a huge success for us as well. It's nice to have involvement from the whole team,” she said.

The team which plays in the Strathmore Soccer Association under the Canal Links Soccer Federation has also been invited to take part in provincials in Edmonton from March 11 to 13th.

Visit the Spurs Go Fund Me account that they hope will help offset some of the costs associated with getting to the competition like booking hotels for the players, and the entry fee for Alberta Soccer.
