Get ready, set, and they’re off! That’s going to be part of the excitement in a couple of weeks on February 21 when the Standard Skateothon kicks off. Skating on an outdoor rink is something that is so typically part of a Canadian winter. Next month you can help keep that tradition alive by supporting the Standard Ag Society at the Standard Skateothon.

The skateothon is a fundraising event that is being held to help put up boards at the Standard Outdoor Rink. Last year, the community raised approximately $11,000 at the skateothon, which is a remarkable amount for such a small community. This year’s goal is to raise about $15,000.

Jay Schultz from the Standard Ag. Society explains that they are now in one of the final phases of the project. “We've currently got concrete in place and lighting, and the next step is to build boards.”

“The purpose of the Ag. Society is to help facilitate activity for kids in rural places in Alberta and specifically the Standard Ag. Society helps operate the standard arena as well as the outdoor rink now. And it also is involved in baseball in Standard.”

He revealed that all together to purchase a set of boards and the concrete will cost about $90,000.

“Lots of kids in the teams that are in Standard will be skating and looking for sponsors, either a flat rate or per lap donation,” said Schultz. “The last time we ran the skateothon the kids typically did around 60 laps. Last time I did about 67. We’re looking for sponsorship for laps and we'll be posting on our Facebook page.”

There’s also an opportunity for companies to advertise the skateothon in the community as the ag society will be putting up posters. At the event, there will be a DJ that will also acknowledge the sponsorships.

Sponsorships range from $100 for Silver, $200 for Gold and $500 for Platinum.

The Standard Skateothon will take place on February 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. To become a sponsor or to pledge contact standard.arena@gmail.com.
